Here’s a simple breakdown of the steps in freight forwarding:  

• Export Haulage

Goods are picked up from the seller’s location and transported to the freight forwarder’s warehouse or port.  

• Export Customs Clearance

 The necessary customs paperwork is completed so the goods can leave the country legally.  

• Origin Handling  

 The shipment is checked, labeled, and prepared for transport (like loading onto a ship, plane, or truck).  

• Freight Transport:  

   Goods are transported by air, sea, or land to the destination country.  

• Destination Handling

   Goods are unloaded, inspected, and prepared for delivery.  

• Import Customs Clearance 

   Customs authorities in the destination country inspect the goods and check the paperwork.  

• Import Haulage  

   The shipment is delivered from the port to the buyer’s final location.  

As an importer you need to know and have 3 main documents namely your Airwaybill/Bill of Lading, your invoice and your packing list that gives a description of the goods and ideally dimensions and weight of goods
